◉ Why you can't read in a moving car
You have a sense you were never taught to name — the one that knows, right now, which way is down and whether you're turning. It lives in your inner ear, and the queasiness of reading in a moving car is what happens when it and your eyes tell your brain two different stories about whether you're moving.

A chili pepper has no heat in it and mint has no cold, yet one burns your mouth and the other chills it. The reason is a set of tiny gates in your nerve endings — the TRP channels — that can't tell a temperature from a molecule shaped like one, and it won a Nobel Prize in 2021.
