Here’s something a little unsettling about your own brain: it will hand you a small hit of reward for something new before it has any idea whether the new thing is good. Novelty itself is the payout. Show the dopaminergic midbrain — the substantia nigra and ventral tegmental area, the same regions that respond to reward — a stimulus it hasn’t seen before, and it fires, even when there’s nothing yet to gain. Bunzeck and Düzel described this novelty signal directly; you can think of it as a bonus the brain pays out just for encountering the unfamiliar. New isn’t only a means to a reward. For a moment, new is the reward.

There’s an evolutionary logic to it. Panksepp mapped a basic drive he named SEEKING — the restless, appetitive, sniff-around-the-environment system that pushes an animal to explore before it knows what’s out there. Novelty is that system’s fuel. And it does something quietly useful downstream: novel context appears to prime the memory system to encode more, as if the brain tags “this is new” with “so pay attention and write it down.” Explore, and remember what you found. That’s the machinery.

Now point it at the problem every product eventually has: the user who drifted away and came back. What greets a returning user decides whether the return sticks — and the novelty bonus tells you what to put in front of them. Something genuinely new — content, a feature, activity, a change — isn’t merely informative. It’s mildly rewarding on contact, and it nudges the SEEKING system into “let’s look around.” This is the real reason “what’s new since you were here,” a fresh changelog, “12 new this week,” or a visibly-changed home surface work. They aren’t just reducing confusion. They’re handing the brain its bonus at the exact moment you most need the person to lean back in.

But the bonus has a catch, and it’s the whole ethics of the move: it pays out for genuine novelty. The brain is very good at learning that a given “new” isn’t. Manufactured novelty — the reshuffled feed that’s the same items in a new order, the “New!” badge on nothing, the cosmetic repaint sold as a change — earns the bonus exactly once. After that the system habituates, and worse, it learns that your signal for new is noise. You don’t just lose the current hit; you burn the channel. The next time you have something authentically new, the word has stopped meaning anything. Novelty is a currency you can counterfeit, and counterfeiting it devalues your own money.

Two design consequences worth holding onto. First, spend your novelty where there’s something real to explore behind it, and make the newness legible — mark what changed, point at it, let them poke at it. The bonus is a spur to explore; give the exploration somewhere to go. Second, don’t confuse this with two things it resembles. It isn’t the variable-reward slot-machine effect, which runs on uncertainty about a payoff — novelty needs no payoff to land. And it isn’t quite the reward-you-didn’t-predict signal either; the novelty bonus fires for the unfamiliar-and-not-yet-valued, before any reward is even on the table. Different lever, different feel.

And a limit, because too much new stops being a bonus and becomes a threat. A returning user who finds everything rearranged doesn’t feel explored-toward; they feel lost. The comfortable version pairs the new with enough of the familiar that the novelty reads as discovery rather than disorientation — a mostly-recognizable place with a few bright new things in it, not a stranger’s house.

The move, in one line: when someone comes back, show them something genuinely new to explore — and never teach them that your “new” is a lie.
