You know the moment. You’re on the couch, you decide you need the charger from the bedroom, you get up with the thought held perfectly clear in your mind — charger, bedroom, go — and somewhere around the bedroom doorway it evaporates. You stand there, mildly betrayed by your own head, and then trudge back to the couch, where it usually returns. It feels like a glitch. It’s closer to a feature.
Researchers have actually staged this in the lab, and the culprit is embarrassingly literal: the door. In one line of experiments, people moved through virtual rooms carrying objects, setting some down and picking others up, and were quizzed on what they were holding. The finding was that they remembered worse right after passing through a doorway than after walking the same distance across a single large room. Same steps, same seconds, same objects — the only difference was whether a threshold had been crossed. They ran it in real rooms too, and even had people merely imagine walking through a doorway, and the dip showed up anyway. The doorway wasn’t blocking the memory physically. Something about the event of passing through one was flushing it.
The idea underneath is that your brain doesn’t record life as one continuous tape. It quietly chops experience into episodes — events with beginnings and endings — and it decides where to cut at moments it senses a change: a new location, a new person, a shift in what you’re doing. Perception researchers call these cuts event boundaries. Most of the time you never notice the editing; the film feels seamless. But at each cut, the brain does something like closing one file and opening another. Whatever you were holding in working memory was tagged to the event you just left, and crossing the boundary makes it a little harder to reach — you’ve walked out of the context where it was filed.
This reframes the couch trudge. When you go back to the room where the thought started, you’re not “retracing your steps” in some vague ritual sense — you’re literally walking back into the context the memory was filed under, re-opening the event, and the charger pops back because you’ve returned to the shelf it was on. The cure works because the disease was contextual all along.
Once you see event boundaries, you start noticing them everywhere the brain files something. It’s why a good story is broken into scenes and a good essay into paragraphs — the writer is placing the cuts on your behalf, giving your brain tidy events to store instead of one undifferentiated smear. It’s why walking into a meeting can wipe the brilliant point you had in the hallway, and why changing tabs can lose you the sentence you were about to write. Each is a threshold of some kind, and your brain treats the crossing as the end of a chapter.
There’s something almost consoling in it. The forgetful lurch at the doorway isn’t your memory failing — it’s your memory doing exactly what it’s for, which is not to hold everything at once but to package the endless stream of experience into episodes small enough to remember at all. You forget the charger for the same reason you can remember your life as a set of distinct moments instead of a single grey blur. The doorway that costs you a thought is the same machinery that gives you chapters. Most days that’s a trade worth making. On the days it isn’t, the fix is free: walk back through the door.

Effect sizes vary and some lab replications are livelier than others — the mechanism (the brain segments experience into events, and boundaries tax memory) is well supported; treat any single number with the usual caution.
