You have a memory like this. You know exactly where you were when you heard the news — the room, the light, who said it, what you were holding. It plays like a short film, and you’d bet real money on every frame. That certainty, it turns out, is the most misleading thing about it. The vividness of a shocking-moment memory is a very good measure of how much you felt at the time, and a surprisingly poor measure of whether the details are true.

Psychologists named these “flashbulb memories” in 1977 — Brown and Kulik, studying how people recalled learning of assassinations and other public shocks. The images were so sharp and so durable that the researchers proposed a special brain mechanism, a kind of now print! command that stamps the whole scene into permanent storage when something momentous and emotional happens. It’s an intuitive idea. It’s also, on the evidence that came later, mostly wrong about the “permanent” and “accurate” part — while being very right that these memories feel different.

The study that cracked it open was almost accidental. The morning after the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded in 1986, Ulric Neisser had students write down exactly how they’d heard — where, from whom, what they were doing. Two and a half years later he asked the same people again. Why would the brain build a memory that feels certain and isn’t? The leading account is about what strong emotion actually does. A jolt of fear or shock switches on the amygdala, which turns up the encoding around it — you lay down a memory that’s richer in sensory and emotional texture, and, crucially, tagged with a strong sense of significance. That tag is what you later read as confidence: this mattered, I was there, I can see it, therefore it must be right. But the tag is a statement about the emotion, not a certificate of the facts. And the underlying memory is still an ordinary memory — reconstructed fresh every time you recall it, quietly editable, absorbing details from later retellings and news footage and the way you’ve told the story a hundred times since. Each confident retelling is also a rewrite. So the flashbulb memory isn’t protected from the normal erosion of memory; it just wears a badge that tells you not to check.

This is worth more than trivia, because confidence and accuracy being separate variables is a fact we spend our whole lives ignoring. We use the feeling of certainty as a proxy for truth — in our own heads, in the “I clearly remember you saying that” of an argument, and, far more seriously, in courtrooms, where a confident eyewitness is deeply persuasive to a jury and confidence is a weaker guide to accuracy than it feels. The vividness is real; it’s just evidence of the wrong thing. It tells you how hard the moment hit, not how faithfully you recorded it.

None of this means emotional memory is worthless — hold the hedges. The broad gist of a big event usually survives fine; it’s the confident specifics, the exact frames, that you should hold loosely. Mechanisms and effect sizes are still debated, some kinds of detail hold up better than others, and studies disagree at the edges. But the core dissociation is robust enough to change how you carry your own sharpest memories: the more certain a memory feels, the less that feeling should count as evidence. The film in your head is beautifully shot. It is not the raw footage.
